Buttery toast, runny egg, 3 ingredients, and ready in 10 minutes. Dad’s Egg-in-Toast (or Egg in a Hole) breakfast is hard to beat in both ease and yumminess.

What is Dad’s Egg-in-Toast?

My siblings and I grew up calling this breakfast “Egg-In-Toast”. You all have told me it is otherwise known as Egg in a Hole, Toad in the Hole, Egg in a Basket, One-Eyed Jack, Birdie in a Basket, and probably other names.

It’s a simple one-skillet breakfast made with butter, a slice of bread, an egg, and salt and pepper. Toast the bread in the melted butter on the skillet, and cook the egg in a hole torn out of the middle of the bread. That’s it!

It was my dad’s special breakfast for my 4 siblings and I growing up, and it continues to be one of my family’s go-to breakfast staples. I hope it becomes a favorite breakfast in your home, as well!

  • Then, once the egg is partially cooked (about 2 minutes), use a spatula to flip each piece of toast over being careful to not puncture the yolk. Flip the center circles as well. Next, let it cook for another 2-3 minutes until all the egg white is cooked, but the yolk is still runny. Enjoy!
